Halloween is a time for costumes, candy, and spooky fun, but for our furry friends, it can also bring unexpected dangers. At Eastern Animal Hospital, we want to help you keep your pets safe and stress-free during the festivities. Here are our top Halloween safety tips for pet parents:

🧁 1. Keep the Treats Out of Reach

Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free gum and candy), raisins, and other Halloween goodies can be toxic to pets. Make sure candy bowls are kept well out of reach, and remind kids not to share their loot with pets.

If your pet ingests something they shouldn’t, call us or contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

👻 2. Choose Costumes Carefully

Dressing up your pet can be adorable, but not all pets enjoy wearing costumes. If you do dress them up:

  • Make sure the costume fits well and doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, or vision.
  • Avoid costumes with small, chewable parts.
  • Let your pet try on the costume before Halloween to ensure they’re comfortable.

If your pet seems stressed or uncomfortable, it’s best to skip the costume and opt for a festive bandana or collar instead.

🚪 3. Watch the Door

With trick-or-treaters coming and going, your front door will be opening frequently. This can be stressful for pets and an easy escape route!

  • Keep pets in a quiet, secure room away from the front door.
  • Make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing ID tags, just in case they slip out.

🕯️ 4. Decorate with Care

Jack-o’-lanterns, candles, and string lights can be hazardous to curious pets. A wagging tail or a curious paw can knock over decorations and cause burns or fires.

  • Use battery-operated candles instead of real flames.
  • Keep cords and decorations out of reach to prevent chewing or entanglement.

🐾 5. Be Mindful of Anxiety

The sights and sounds of Halloween—costumes, doorbells, loud noises—can be overwhelming for some pets. If your pet is prone to anxiety:

  • Create a calm, cozy space for them to retreat to.
  • Consider using calming pheromone sprays or anxiety wraps.
  • Talk to your veterinarian about additional options if needed.
